Militants kill six soldiers in Bakassi

Armed militants on Saturday killed six unidentified soldiers in the Esighi axis of Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The gunmen were said to have struck around 1am.

Five soldiers were said to have died instantly, while a sixth one died at about 7am, according to a village source

Army troops from the 13 Brigade in Calabar had recently cordoned off the residence of one of the most wanted militants, identified as ‘G1’, after the arrest of ‘G2’ and ‘G3’who are currently providing useful information to security operatives.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has directed passengers not to turn on or charge their Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices while aboard any plane.

The general manager, public relations of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Sam Adurogboye, has directed Nigerian passengers not to turn on or charge their Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices while aboard any airplane.

Adurogboye who gave the directive on behalf of the NCAA on Tuesday, said the action was necessary following recent incidents and concerns raised by manufacturers of the product, and warned passengers not to keep the phones in any checked-in baggage.

The Central Bank governor Godwin Emefiele has categorically rejected demands by Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun and yours truly, for the CBN to reduce interest rates to enable small businesses have access to funds to ease the recession and promote growth.

According to a report in the Vanguard, the Apex bank governor argued that when N1trillion was recently injected by the CBN into the economy or made available to the banks, that rather "than loan this money to the banks or loan them to the consumers, or agriculture and manufacturers, like we said in the communique, we found that those credit went to traders, who used them to demand for foreign exchange, which ended up putting pressure on the foreign exchange market...Subsequent to that, we said since this money wasn’t deployed directly. He further said: “But we said we are not going to allow the banks to really have the cash until they send proposals to the CBN for primary agric projects, new manufacturing projects and other projects that will spur industrial capacity and manufacturing output."

Muslim youths attack carpenter for eating during fasting [PHOTO]

A 41-year-old carpenter, Mr. Francis Emmanuel Francis, almost lost his right eye on Tuesday following an attack on him by Muslim youths for not observing the Ramadan fast.

This is coming barely a week after a 74-year-old, Mrs Bridget Agbahime, was murdered in Kano for allegedly blaspheming Prophet Mohammed.

An eyewitness account had it that the carpenter courted trouble for himself when he was spotted by some Muslim boys in the Sokoto Road area of Kakuri,in Kaduna South Local Government Area, when a at about 2.30pm, eating when others were supposed to be observing the fast. This drew the ire of the youth who started beating him.

A Gudu Upper Area Court in Abuja on Thursday, sentenced Mr John Okeke to six weeks imprisonment for stealing two cell telephones. The judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, gave an option of fine in the sum of N8, 000 and ordered that the convict should be given six strokes of cane. Kagarko advised him to desist from criminal activities. Okeke of Area 1, Garki, Abuja, was arraigned on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, criminal trespass and theft.

Vanguard reports that, the Prosecutor, Kufreabasi Ebong, had told the court that one Friday Ahmed of Wumba Village, Abuja, reported the matter at the Apo Police Station on May 27, 2016.

Nigerian football icon Stephen Okechukwu Keshi is dead. Just last year,the 54 year old former international football player and coach lost his wife of 35 years, Kate,after a prolonged battle with cancer.

According to a statement by his family, he died in the early hours of today Wednesday June 8th of Cardiac arrest in Benin, Edo state.His brother Emmanuel Ado said in a statement....

“With thanksgiving to God, the Ogbuenyi Fredrick Keshi family of Illah in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, announces the death of Mr. Stephen Okechukwu Chinedu Keshi.ur son, brother, father, father-in-law, brother-in-law, has gone to be with his wife of 35 years (Nkem ), Mrs. Kate Keshi, who passed on on the 9th December 2015. Since her death, Keshi has been in mourning. He came back to Nigeria to be with her. He had planned to fly back today Wednesday, before he suffered a cardiac arrest. He has found rest.”


The 2013 AFCON winning coach is survived by four children and his mother.

A police corporal, Daramola Tosin, attached to the Ekiti Police Division in the Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, has been dismissed from the Force for allegedly killing an inspector, Mr. Lateef Shuaib.

Tosin allegedly shot Shuaib after secretly withdrawing up to N300,000 from Shuaib’s bank account without his consent.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Shuaib had entrusted Tosin with his Automated Teller Machine card when he fell ill.

The suspect was said to have initially withdrawn money for the use of the father of two.

Speaking to newsmen at the Warri Naval Base,The Commander, NNS Delta, Commodore Raimi Mohammed, who presented the suspect alongside others allegedly involved in the act of vandalism and criminal activities in the maritime sector, described the arrest as a major breakthrough.He said

50,000 Abuja workers sacked in two months

Over 50,000 workers have lost their jobs in Abuja in the last two months.The President, Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Tony Ejinkeonye, confirmed the job losses in an exclusive interview with a Punch correspondent in Abuja.

Thousands flee Borno as Boko Haram attacks intensified

Thousands of residents of villages on the outskirts of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, fled their communities at the weekend following intensified attacks by the insurgent group, Boko Haram.

The terrorists had lately resorted to suicide bombing of soft targets, using mainly women, after the military chased them out of territories they occupied. President Muhammadu Buhari maintains that the expulsion of Boko Haram from the areas they controlled is a technical defeat of the group.

But Boko Haram fighters resumed coordinated attacks on communities in Borno State recently. They killed 65 persons in Dalori two Saturdays ago and laid siege to two other nearby villages, Mairi and Malari, Friday night where they killed four persons and virtually razed the entire community.

Biafra: Ex-Militants Give FG 31-Day Ultimatum to Release Kanu

Niger Delta ex-militant leaders in support of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) struggle have given Federal Government 31-day deadline to free the leader of the group and Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, or face the consequences.

Also, the former warlords warned security agencies against tampering with the life of the IPOB leader, who is detained at Kuje Prison. Spokesperson of the concerned ex-militants, simply identified as General Ben, warned that at the expiration of the ultimatum, they would resume massive abduction of expatriates as a first step.

EFCC files 22 fresh charges against Tompolo over alleged N22.7bn fraud

Eight days after a judge ordered the arrest of former Niger Delta militant leader Tompolo over his refusal to appear in court on a 40-count charge of alleged N34bn fraud earlier filed against him and nine others, the EFCC on Friday January 22nd, filed 22 fresh charges at the Federal High court Abuja, against the ex-Niger Delta militant leader and 12 others over allegations of stealing, advanced fee fraud and money laundering to the tune of N22,765,900,000.

The anti-graft agency has listed 25 witnesses that are to testify against Tompolo in the fresh charges.

Subsidy Removed! Official Price of Kerosene increases to N83

The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA)‎ has increased the price of Household Kerosene from N50 to N83.

This is contained in its products pricing template, released on Sunday in Abuja. It stated that the N83 per litre price applied only to theNigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) outlets. The template also showed that at N83, the Federal Government will be making a gain of N10.72 on every litre. It further puts the expected open market price, which is the landing cost plus total margins at N72.28 per litre.

The governments of the United States and the United Kingdom have said they do not recognise the passports being issued by the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra.

The National Director of Information, MASSOB, Sunny Okereafor, had said two weeks ago that the passport was valid worldwide, adding that the travel document costs N5,000 while its renewal costs N2,000. He had said,

“I assure you that the Biafran passport is valid. Except Nigeria, other countries of the world accept Biafran passport and allow our citizens to travel with it. In Europe, North and South America, Biafran passport is accepted. Nigeria is the only country that seizes Biafran passport. Go to neighbouring Ghana here, they will stamp the passport for you. Lassa fever claims first casualty in Lagos

The Lagos State Government yesterday confirmed two more cases of Lassa fever in the state with one of the victims already dead.

The development brought the number of Lassa fever cases in the state to three, including the index case at Ahmaddiya Hospital in Ojokoro part of the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, yesterday said the deceased is a a 51-year-old resident of Ilasan Leki and indigene of Edo State,was initially admitted at Divine Medical Centre in Ikoyi on January 12, this year, but died at 2 pm the same day before the result of the laboratory test that confirmed him positive was received.His corpse has been kept in the morgue in a leakproof body bag.

Man arrested for raping his 3 year old daughter [PHOTO]

A 32-year-old man, identified simply as Mustapha, has been arrested by the Plateau State Police Command for allegedly raping his three-year-old daughter, Iqma (pseudonym).

It was learnt that the incident happened on January 12 in the Katako area of the state while the victim’s mother was cooking in a makeshift kitchen within their compound.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the woman had gone into the room to pick some ingredients for the dish she was preparing when she caught her husband in the act.

An angry mob was said to have descended on the suspect after his wife alerted neighbours to the incident.

A 43-year-old man, Opeyemi Adesina, who allegedly paraded himself as a consultant gynaecologist with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, says he paid N100,000 to buy the seven forged certificates he used.

Adesina, who hails from Ekiti State, was arrested on Tuesday by the Alakara Police Division on Alowolodu Street in the Alapere, Ketu area of Lagos State.

An official order from the Federal High Court in Abuja has been issued for the arrest of former Niger Delta militant, Government Epemupolo also known as Tompolo who is being investigated by the EFCC for allegedly fraudulently selling a land for N13 billion to the last administration for the construction of a Nigerian Maritime University (NMU).

Tompolo was in December last year invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for questioning but refused to honor their invitation claiming he was in court against the anti-graft agency.

Kidnappers Abduct RCCG Pastor during Service

A pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God has been kidnapped by yet-to-be identified persons.

It was gathered that Pastor Ayo Raphael was kidnapped during the Sunday service at the Resurrection parish of the RCCG in Kabba junction in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.

Eyewitnesses said the kidnappers, numbering about 10, stormed the church auditorium at about 9am and ordered the congregation to lie face down.

An eyewitness, who pleaded not to be named, said:

“The pastor was dragged out of the church into the bush while the abductors shot sporadically into the air to facilitate their escape.”

The dad of a teenage girl who was gang raped in a New York park said he had no choice but to run away when his daughter was attacked.The unidentified man told how the thugs put a gun in his face and ordered him to leave the playground on Thursday night.

After he fled his 18-year-old daughter was raped in a playground area in the run-down Brownsville part of Brooklyn.He said he felt the gang would kill him if he stayed and tried to fight.

Speaking to ABC news, he said:

"The one put a gun in my face telling me to run, and all of them had their way with her."

As he did not have a phone, he ran to some nearby shops to ask for help but says they refused.

Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor Slams his Critics: 'I Left N600m in PFN Account'

Former National President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria,  Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor,has said he left N600m in the coffers of PFN and almost completed a secretariat for the association.

Oritsejafor, who spoke to PUNCH in Warri, Delta State, added that he also secured a land and built a 4-star hotel for the Christian Association of Nigeria.

The clergyman stated that the hotel would be commissioned and run by a consortium firm.

Oritsejafor, who described his critics as shameless and faceless human beings who deserve deliverance from God, noted that people usually do not talk about his achievements.

The hard and soft copies of the 2016 budget documents President Muhammadu Buhari handed over to the National Assembly on December 22, 2015, have been declared missing, PREMIUM TIMES can authoritatively report.

The Nigerian Senate was scheduled to commence deliberation on the proposed budget Tuesday (today).

But Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, shocked lawmakers at a closed-door session, when he told them the budget documents had been stolen, people familiar with the matter told PREMIUM TIMES.

Angela Merkel seeks tougher laws to deport convicted migrants after Cologne sex attacks

Germany’s chancellor, Angela Merkel, has proposed tougher laws that would make it easier to deport migrants after a wave of sex attacks in Cologne that were allegedly carried out by asylum seekers – an incident she is reported to have described as “a bombshell”.
Merkel is said to have made the remark while speaking to members of her Christian Democrat party (CDU) at its closed-door annual policy meeting in the western city of Mainz on Saturday, sources told Der Spiegel.

The gathering – which was reportedly “very heated” – focused on introducing tougher criminal penalties following the Cologne attacks.
